I live in a hockey town. My husband and both my boys played hockey. I even spent four years learning to play the sport through our City of Kamloops Parks and Recreation Dept. What a hoot! When I started, the only thing I knew how to do was to skate forward. I had to use the boards to stop. Hockey is the first real team sport I ever really played. I was an aerobics girl in the 80’s and 90’s, and then I traded in the gym for marathon running. Hockey is certainly much more than just a sport. It is a way of life. Nothing compares to the freeing feeling of gliding on the ice. The air is crisp, clean and invigorating (as long as your teammates’ gear has been washed a time or two… LOL).
The hockey jersey quilt concept happened as an after thought. My memory quilting business was in its first year when I was trying to think of a unique gift to give my nephew for graduation. My children, although they played the sport for many years, were primarily involved in recreation hockey. But my nephew had participated in Rep hockey and I figured his mom had a closet full of jerseys. Sure enough, I guessed right.
Hockey jerseys, lacrosse jerseys, softball jerseys–sports jerseys of any kind, make beautiful memory quilts. Other memorabilia such as towels, jackets, T-shirts, sweatshirts, or sweatpants can also be included. We do not work with ball caps, as the insignia does not lie flat when it is cut out. Jersey quilts can be slightly heavier than quilts made from T-shirts. My nephew can’t say enough good things about his quilt. He has it with him while he attends university.
Why do I believe a hockey jersey quilt is the ultimate graduation gift? Well, hockey jerseys represent so much more than just a uniform. Memories of games, tournaments, teammates, and great coaches are intertwined in the team names, team colours, and numbers on the jerseys. Simply put, memory quilts are story tellers.
