As I scour the internet to understand who my competition is and how my quilts compare to others, I am amazed at the constant misuse of the word “quilt”. By definition, a quilt is a multi-layered textile, usually three layers. Many of my competitors are claiming to manufacture a T-shirt quilt; however, they are simply selling you a two-layer blanket.

It is therefore very important for you to understand that an advertised T-shirt quilt may or may not be made in a similar fashion. In order for the consumer to understand the differences, we urge you to read the fine print. Don’t base your decision on the name of the company or the product they claim to manufacture. T-shirt quilts from company to company vary greatly in price and quality similar to many other products like cars or kitchen appliances.

At Memory Quilts by Marnie, we manufacture a traditional three-layer quilt with a handmade double binding. The three layers consist of the following:
1. Quilt top (your clothing items)
2. Batting (middle layer)
3. Backing fabric (Minkie fabric with a soft, blanket like feel)

We also use quality batting and backing fabrics in our quilts. They are 100% machine washable and will withstand the test of time. Our goal is to provide our customers with a lifetime of use, and this is reflected in our workmanship.

A good indication that you are getting a two-layer blanket is the cost. The two-layer construction can be made in far less time and is very affordable. We simply can’t compete with the cost, nor do we choose to. We love that more companies have joined us in the business of upcycling clothing items. But we caution the consumer to understand the difference so that they can make an informed decision.
