Course #TBA

Workshop Fee $130 plus GST

To Register:
Call 250.828.3500 or https://www.kamloops.ca/parks-recreation/perfectmindProgram Description: This course requires that participants know how their particular sewing machine works, and have mastered sewing a straight line; quilting experience is an asset but not required.  (If you would like to learn to use your particular sewing machine, please contact me for a private lesson, prior to the course start date.)

In this class, you will cut clothing items, design a layout, and sew a quilt top.  *Instructions will be provided for adding borders (optional), quilting and binding; however, these steps are not part of the course.

Register today, and let’s take some of the frustration out of sewing with stretchy fabrics.

Overall Learning Outcomes:

  1. Master skills required for working with a wide range of fabrics
  2. Cut designs from shirts using custom rulers (supplied); or cut blocks from clothing using a rotary cutter and quilt ruler
  3. Design a custom layout using multiple size blocks, and mathematical calculations
  4. Sew half-seams (if required for your design)

Program Outline:
Equipment Provided: Custom rulers, iron, ironing board, extra cutting mats (smaller sizes)

Participants to Bring:
1st Class  – Personal clothing items, rotary cutter, 6” straight ruler, fabric scissors, pen or pencil, and cutting mat. (The cutting mat will be placed inside your clothing items.  It should be big enough to cover a large surface area without stretching the fabric i.e. If you are working with men’s T-shirts, a larger mat (18” x 24”) is appropriate; if you are working with baby clothes, a very small mat is more suitable for your needs.)

Note: If your primary source of clothing is “assorted”, where the fabrics, and not the pre-printed design, is the memory, please bring a 6” x 24” quilt ruler. ?Custom rulers will be supplied, for your use, if you are cutting T-shirts, jerseys…any clothing item with a pre-printed design, including baby clothes.

2nd and subsequent Classes – Pre-cut blocks, old sheet for lay out (twin or larger) Sewing machine, stretch needles and/or ball point needles, extension cord, seam ripper, fabric scissors, straight pins, neutral colour thread (cream or lt. grey) cotton or polyester (your preference)
Recommended: Walking foot (however, a standard pressure foot or ¼” foot will work)
Optimum (but only if your machine comes with this option):  Straight stitch needle plate

General Information:
The T-shirts can be a cotton, or cotton-poly blend, including technical fabrics, jerseys, and fleece or nylon (leggings not recommended).  If you are unsure, bring it to class! Assorted clothing and fabric can also be included, or form the basis of your memory quilt.

Clothing items should come to class folded to minimize wrinkles.  We strongly recommend that if there are new items in your stash, that these items are pre-washed.  Your quilt will be machine washable, and all items should be preshrunk before they are cut into blocks.

You will learn a method to sew stretchy fabrics without the use of a stabilizer or interfacing!

Each week you will have some work to complete at home prior to the next class.  The amount of time could be anywhere from 1 – 4 hours per week (approximate) and can vary depending on experience.

Your quilt will be custom designed by you!  Borders are optional. By the time the course is complete, you will have a quilt top sewn together made from your personal clothing items.  Check out photos on our home page for examples!
